Good luck!!
Just had a very interesting telephone convo where we learned that there are a few people in the industry who don’t understand what California Broker is or who publishes the magazine. (Veterans — you can skip this.) California Broker is an independent magazine published by McGee Publishers, a family-owned company. The weekly Insurance Insider newsletter is a supplement to the magazine. Our publisher is Ric Madden. We’re not associated with any professional organization, but we enthusiastically support their efforts and gladly serve as a megaphone to announce important happenings. In fact, for more than 35 years Cal Broker has covered the news and events that impact the state’s life and health insurance, employee benefits and financial planning industries. Our business model has always been the traditional one — advertisers who believe in an informed, educated and enlightened professional community support us. If you’re interested in supporting Cal Broker’s efforts as an advertiser, please reach out to Devon Hunter (devon@calbrokermag.com). If you have story ideas or news, please email editor@calbrokermag.com. Namaste, folks!

ACLI President Rebuts Wall Street Journal Editorial, Urges Senate To Pass SECURE Act
Susan Neely, president and CEO of the American Council of Life Insurers (ACLI), sent out the following statement about today’s Wall Street Journal editorial IRAs in Political Sights:
“Low and middle-income Americans struggling to save for retirement are depending on the U.S. Senate to pass the SECURE Act. Only the wealthiest of Americans, less than 1 percent, use the ‘stretch IRA’ for estate planning. SECURE’s ‘stretch IRA’ provision shouldn’t derail a package to help millions of working Americans save for retirement. One provision of the SECURE Act will get more than 700,000 Americans who work for small businesses to save for retirement. The Senate should seize the historic opportunity at hand to pass this bill and confront America’s retirement savings challenges.”
Fewer Californians on Disability
KHN’s Phillip Reese reports that tens of thousands of Californians have come off disability and gone back to work, part of a national trend that reflects a surging U.S. economy, a shift toward less conventional work and tighter supervision of what qualifies a worker for disability benefits.
The number of adults in California collecting Social Security disability benefits fell by nearly 50,000, or 7%, from 2013 to 2017, with the biggest decline coming between 2016 and 2017, according to the latest federal statistics. The drop follows years of steep increases nationally and statewide as workers left the labor market amid a brutal recession and started drawing disability benefits.
