Over 19M could enroll in ACA plans for 2024, CMS says
Enrollment in the Affordable Care Act exchanges could be boosted by extended subsidies and the effects of Medicaid redeterminations.
In January, the CMS announced a record-breaking 16.3 million people had signed up for ACA marketplace plans during open enrollment for 2023, as a result of federal subsidies that aimed to protect beneficiaries from premium hikes.

Older Americans Say They Feel Trapped in Medicare Advantage Plans
In 2016, Richard Timmins went to a free informational seminar to learn more about Medicare coverage.
“I listened to the insurance agent and, basically, he really promoted Medicare Advantage,” Timmins said. The agent described less expensive and broader coverage offered by the plans, which are funded largely by the government but administered by private insurance companies.
For Timmins, who is now 76, it made economic sense then to sign up. And his decision was great, for a while.

Medicare is overpaying for certain common, over-the-counter drugs: study
Medicare Part D will cover certain over the counter products when prescribed by a clinician, and when it does, the program pays far more for these drugs, according to a recent study.
Researchers at Johns Hopkins identified 22 drugs that are available both over-the-counter and via prescription; in 2020, Medicare paid out claims for 20 of those therapies. The analysts then identified the OTC price for these drugs, finding prices for 19.

How will providers be affected by California’s new coverage of undocumented immigrants?
San Diego health systems see financial and operational benefits in the state’s latest expansion of Medi-Cal benefits for undocumented immigrants.
The change, which took effect on New Year’s Day, allows those ages 26 to 49 to enroll in the state’s health insurance system of last resort regardless of immigration status. The move by Gov. Gavin Newsom fills the remaining age gap in the coverage picture. In 2020, California expanded Medi-Cal access to undocumented immigrants age 26 and younger and took the same step in 2022 for those age 50 and older.
