A regulation proposed by California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara to stop insurance companies from overcharging homeowners who reduce their risk of loss from wildfires must also apply to insurance companies’ decisions about which properties they will insure, consumer groups will testify at a public hearing in Oakland today. NAIC Kicks Off Another Podcast Season
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) has kicked off the fourth season of its podcast, “The Regulators.” Episode 1 of the season features NAIC CEO Mike Consedine and Colorado Division of Insurance Commissioner Michael Conway discussing Disaster Preparedness and the impact of the Marshall Fire.

IICF Gives Big; Honors Aon’s Eric J. Andersen
Big kudos to the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation (IICF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping communities and enriching lives. IICF granted nearly $410,000 at its seventh annual IICF Western Division Horizon Award Gala at The Majestic Downtown in Los Angeles last week. The event gathered insurance leaders from the Western states, along with representatives of nonprofit partners. Eric J. Andersen, President of Aon, was honored with IICF’s Golden Horizon Award. Presented by Aon’s Chief People Officer, Lisa Stevens, this annual award recognizes an individual within the insurance community who has demonstrated philanthropic excellence and leadership. Andersen is actively involved with the Federal Advisory Committee on Insurance (FACI), as well as the Insurance Development Forum (IDF). He sits on the board of trustees of Colgate University and is a board member of Covenant House New Jersey, which helps homeless, at-risk and runaway youth.

Make Lunches for Sack Lunch Sunday
We’ve mentioned this previously, but just want to remind you that many Los Angeles area insurance industry folks are participating in Sack Lunch Sunday, a grassroots effort that involves making sack lunches for people without homes. Some people are very artistic and decorate or paint the bags in amazing ways. That’s NOT required. What is required? Sign up to pack 10 or more lunches and drop them off at your chosen spot on Sunday by the designated time (see link below to sign up and see a list of drop off locations).
Lunches must include these seven items:
Napkin, Sandwich, Drink, Chips, Snack/Granola Bar, Fruit, Cookies/Dessert
Additional items in the bags like candy, hygiene products, toys, etc., are appreciated but not required. Do NOT include money.

Women Make Great Advisors
InvestmentNews says women are a natural fit for the job of financial advisor:
Korn Ferry data show women are 45% more likely to demonstrate consistent empathy than men and bring a different perspective to professional discussions. These emotional and social competencies are essential for financial advisers, as they often have tough conversations with clients and handle delicate situations. During the pandemic, I heard from women advisers who mourned with their clients over the death of a loved one but were also there to celebrate weddings, graduations and other milestones. None of that has anything to do with wealth building or compound interest, but everything to do with taking care of the client.

Aflac Incorporated announced that Teresa L. White, president, Aflac U.S., will retire effective March 31, 2023:
Under White’s leadership, Aflac reshaped its internal processes to adapt to the changing dynamics of the marketplace, and expanded technology innovation with tools and solutions designed to both support sales growth and to reimagine the customer experience. She is responsible for driving a carefully designed strategy aimed to expand both distribution and product offering, including standing up the broker distribution channel and launching the consumer markets platforms, as well as actively onboarding strategic acquisitions like Empowered Benefit, Aflac Northern Ireland, Argus and Zurich. During her tenure, Aflac has realized record all-time annual new sales and record premium persistency.
